2023 Resident Survey

The VCA Executive conducted a survey of residents in March 2023.  A summary of the results was shared at the Annual General Meeting on April 19, 2023.  The Executive has been reviewing the many suggestions provided through the survey, determining those that are within our mandate, examining those that were mentioned multiple times, prioritizing them, researching possible actions and following up on those that seem possible to accomplish.

Over the next few months, we will be providing updates on what we have been able to accomplish or find out. We may be asking for volunteers to help move some of these ideas forward! Stay tuned!

Suggestion:  Install benches or picnic tables in parkettes, especially along Norton/ Macdonell.

  • We contacted John and Adam Hawley to see whether or not a few of the picnic tables no longer used for the Supper Market would be available to be placed under the trees at the corner of Norton and Macdonell.  They referred us to Sharon Brimstead-Taylor, who convenes the Saturday morning market and Sharon agreed to give us 3.  We contacted the Town to see if they would be in agreement, since they would have to mow around them.  However, despite the number of suggestions provided in the survey, residents in this area are very much opposed to this idea, for a variety of reasons. Therefore, this suggestion has been abandoned.

  • We have been in touch with the Town regarding memorial benches and will be sharing with residents a process through which a bench could be purchased through and installed by the Town.  Benches would be of the same style that are currently in Dietsch Parkette and in the parkette at the end of Elizabeth and Samuel Streets.

Suggestion/Issue:  Some people accessing the Medical Centre or Lifelabs park in front of mailboxes on Perez, therefore obstructing access to mailboxes by residents with limited mobility.

  • We have been in contact with the Town to request signage restricting the amount of time for parking in this location -  E.g. ’10 minute parking only’.  This may not be an issue once the streets in the Business Centre are completed and access to the parking lot is clearer.

  • Updated December 2023 - We have made a Service Request to the town and they have approved the placement of signs restricting parking at the mailboxes.  They do not have a date at this time for the installation, but it has been requested of the Roads department.

Suggestion: Monitor Town Council agendas for items relevant to or impacting on The Village.  Send a member to attend Council meeting if relevant.

  • Links to Town Council and Regional meeting agendas have been added to the VCA website.  Residents are invited to view agendas and let the Executive know if they think an upcoming item is relevant to The Village.  Executive will make a decision about sending a representative to the Council or Regional meeting – residents may be asked to volunteer to attend or listen to a meeting online.

Suggestion:  Beautifying The Village - Wrap the Hydro Boxes.

  • Update August 2023
Spoke to the Pumphouse Arts Centre who directed us to the NOTL Hydro.  Spoke to Hydro who explained:
They do 3 free ones each year.  They do not have a request list - not wanting to show favoritism.  They select those they they feel are in more visible public locations.
Hydro has already wrapped the box by the Shoppers/CIBC parking lot.  So The Village is likely not high on the list to be done in the near future.  If The Village wants to pay to cover the hydro boxes the cost to have a box covered is $1500 to $2000 each depending on the size.

  • The Village has over 30 Hydro boxes on our streets.

Suggestion/Issue: Stop Signs at CIBC driveway and Garrison Village Drive

  • Updated September 2023

  • The concern is traffic coming in from Niagara Stone Road causes many near accidents if they do not signal that they are changing lanes to go into the CIBC driveway.  Traffic stopped at the Stop sign on GVD goes forward after stopping if they do not see a turn signal on the on-coming vehicle.

  • Speaking to an officer from the Niagara Regional Police (NRP) it was confirmed the traffic coming into The Village has the right-of-way.  To emphasis this the Officer suggested we ask the Town for signs to be attached to the stop signs says “On-coming traffic has the right-of-way”.  A service request was submitted to the town asking for these signs on the recommendation of the NRP.  The Service Request was refused.  The town suggested we ask the NRP to monitor the intersection and ticket vehicles that do not signal the intention to turn into the CIBC driveway.
