Coyotes in The Village
Update - September 2025

There have been recent reports of coyote sightings in and around Dietsch Park.  While these coyotes did not exhibit unusual behavior (following/stalking), please take caution while walking your pets.

Seasonal behaviour during specific times of the year will affect the number of sightings and the regularity with which residents may observe coyotes. Elevated coyote sightings are likely to occur during the following:

  • Fall during the dispersal of young pack members,

  • Winter during mating periods (Jan-Feb), and

  • Spring during den selection/pup rearing (Mar-June).

The VCA has researched and provides a great deal of educational information with respect to dealing with coyotes in our community and the importance of reporting unusual sightings to the Town office via our website.  As a community, we were successful a few years ago in reducing interactions by following proven strategies.

Please report all coyote sightings

PLEASE REMEMBER TO:

  • Secure trash cans and compost bins

  • Never feed coyotes

  • Remove birdfeeders

  • Do not leave pet food outdoors

  • Scoop your pets’ poop

  • Keep pets under strict control

WHAT TO DO IN A COYOTE ENCOUNTER:

  • Pick up small children and pets

  • Never run from or turn your back on a coyote/domestic dog

  • Wave your arms above your head

  • Be BIG and LOUD! Yell "Go away!"

  • Slowly back away

  • Use hazing techniques such as shaking car keys, popping an umbrella, and throwing an object in the direction of the coyote

  • Always be prepared and aware of your surroundings when enjoying the outdoors. Be a good visitor and leave no trace. Carry out leftover food, garbage, and dog feces.
